Ride 19: Riding on the Edge

Ride Information

START: Car park at Heatherdene S33 0BY, 53.370562, -1.697765 (or Bamford station, Station Approach S32 1EG, 53.339531, -1.689919)

FINISH: Edale station, Station Road S33 7ZN, 53.364876, -1.816596

DISTANCE: 19.7 miles/31.8km

ASCENT: 2857ft/871m

OFF-ROAD: 70% (although the reservoir road beyond the visitor centre is closed on weekends)

TERRAIN: Steep, rocky slopes, boggy moor tops, fireroads and quiet lanes. Severe climbs either side of a flat ride round the reservoir.

NAVIGATION: Tricky in the latter stages. Early on, when climbing to Whinstone Lee Tor go straight ahead; don’t gain any more height toward Hurkling Stones – you’ll soon see the descent to the reservoir. Apart from that, navigation around the water is straightforward. At Hope Cross, make sure you go straight ahead at a junction of five paths, to drop down to Jaggers Clough. If you find yourself climbing still here, or are able to see the reservoir once again, you’ll need to retrace your steps. Use OS Landranger 110.
